IRISH REBELLION. The term applied to the rising of 22 October 1641, when the Irish Catholics (q.v.) seized prominent towns across Ulster (q.v.) and attempted to capture Dublin (q.v.). The Rebellion spread across the country during the rest of the year, embracing the Old English (q.v.) as well as the Irish themselves. By the summer of 1642 the Rebellion had become something of a war for political equality with England, Wales, and Scotland and for religious freedom, if not for true independence. Later in the war there was a call for full independence from Charles I (q.v.) backed by the clerical party and the papal nuncio, Cardinal Rinuccini (q.v.). The Irish Rebellion sparked the war in England and Wales, by giving the king the opportunity to raise arms, an issue that helped drive a wedge between him and Parliament (q.v.). Also, because certain of the rebels including Phelim O’Neill (q.v.) claimed to have a commission from the king empowering them to rebel, it heightened suspicion of Charles I.
